People convicted of driving while under the influence of alcohol who choose an alternative way of serving their sentences than the normal term in prison have a greater chance of preserving their marriage or cohabitation relationships. In a group of drunk drivers who participated in alcohol treatment programs, the percentage maintaining a stable relationship increased from 33 to 40 percent. The new analysis provides insight into why this should be so.
