Equal opportunities in the welfare state
Scandinavian countries have been very successful at creating rich and equal societies. Compared to most other countries income inequality is low, and in principle there is equal access to welfare benefits such as education and health care.
In many countries growing inequality is creating political as well as social unrest and if the equal access to benefits in the welfare state is more theoretical than practical, then there is a potential for inequality and lack of social coherence too in the Scandinavian welfare state. This could threaten the sustainability of the welfare state.
In a five year initiative the ROCKWOOL Foundation will focus on these issues.
